Preparing an Aerodrome for Extreme Weather

Australian tropical cyclone season necessitates diligent preparation in order to adequately protect aerodromes from extreme weather events. An integral part of the role of an Aerodrome Reporting Officer (ARO) is being responsible for securing these vital assets against extreme weather and making informed decisions to safeguard both infrastructure and personnel.

Preparing an aerodrome for a cyclone involves proactive communication with stakeholders, including coordinating with aircraft operators to facilitate the relocation of assets such as aircraft and large equipment. For Aircraft Landing Areas (ALAs), timely dissemination of closure notices via established communication channels is essential.

Physical preparation is paramount. This includes securing or removing loose aerodrome equipment, such as signs and markers, to prevent them from becoming projectiles during high wind conditions. Collaborating with local tenants to implement flood mitigation measures, such as the installation of water pumps, is also a key consideration.

Prior to the potential closure of an aerodrome, thorough serviceability inspections are conducted. The decision to close an aerodrome is based on a comprehensive assessment of meteorological forecasts, historical site data, and recent maintenance records.

Ensuring continued access for emergency services is also a priority. As a precautionary measure, runway and IWI lighting systems are powered down before evacuation. Remote monitoring of weather conditions and CCTV feeds is conducted during the closure.

Upon safe return to the aerodrome, a comprehensive aerodrome inspection is carried out. Serviceable areas are reopened promptly, with any damaged areas clearly marked and restricted as necessary.
