One of RACQ LifeFlight’s AW139 rescue helicopters has spent the day at Redcliffe Aerodrome (YRED) conducting water winch training. Redcliffe Aerodrome is conveniently located on North Brisbane’s coastline, making it a perfect location for organisations like RACQ LifeFlight to use as a base of operations when completing critical water-based training exercises.
The purpose of RACQ LifeFlight water winch training is to ensure that the rescue crew are always ready to respond to rescues and emergencies on the water. Today’s water winch training involved a series of three flights from Redcliffe Aerodrome to a vessel off Redcliffe’s coastline. The exercise saw the pilot hover the aircraft above the vessel, while a rescue person / paramedic was winched down onto the vessel.
Water winch training is no easy task – there are many variables. Trying to line up a moving helicopter with a moving boat is very difficult and has a very small margin for error.
Training like this is vital for keeping our community safe and ensuring our rescue and emergency personnel are highly skilled with up-to-date knowledge in all the various aspects of their role.
